Are the Onboard Shops Duty/Tax-Free?Yes, the shops on cruise ships are typically both duty-free and tax-free. This means you can purchase items without the additional burden of taxes that would normally apply back home. Whether you're looking for designer goods, electronics, or premium spirits, these onboard shops offer enticing deals. Important Considerations Personal Allowance: While the deals are tempting, remember that your home country likely has limits on what you can bring back without incurring extra duties. Be sure to check these allowances before your trip. Product Availability: The selection may vary by cruise line and itinerary. Some popular brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Swarovski are often available, but not guaranteed. Pricing: Although items are duty-free, it’s wise to compare prices beforehand to ensure you're getting the best value. Always come prepared by researching duty-free limitations, especially since each country has its customs regulations. This way, you can shop confidently and enjoy the tax-free perks of your voyage. You can learn more about US Customs Regulations in our E-Academy course.

When Do Onboard Shops Open?Onboard shops are a popular feature of cruise vacations, offering a variety of items from souvenirs to luxury goods. To ensure guests enjoy tax and duty savings, these shops open only when the ship is in international waters. This means that as soon as the ship leaves the port and crosses into these designated waters, guests can begin to explore the onboard shopping options. To find out the exact operational hours during the cruise, guests can: Consult the Daily Newsletter: Most cruises provide a daily schedule or newsletter in your cabin, keeping you updated with specific times. Check Interactive Screens: Many ships have digital notice boards or screens around the vessel displaying current shop hours. Inquire at Guest Services: Visit the guest services desk for additional information on shop availability and any special shopping events. Shopping times might vary based on the cruise itinerary, so it's beneficial to check these resources regularly for the latest updates. Enjoy your shopping experience at sea! Learn more about cruising in general in our E-Academy course, WHAT IS CRUISING?
-
Can guests pay with cash at the onboard shops? When shopping at the onboard stores, guests won't be able to use cash for your purchases. Instead, all transactions require a specific card provided to guests at the beginning of their journey. This card is used not only for buying items but also for accessing various amenities and services on board. Why Use the Onboard Card System? Convenience: Carrying a single card instead of cash streamlines your shopping experience, allowing for quick and easy purchases. Security: The card system reduces the need to carry large sums of money, keeping your funds secure. Tracking: All transactions are recorded, helping you keep track of your spending during your trip. While cash has its place for some personal expenses during excursions, onboard shopping requires the use of this dedicated card to ensure a hassle-free and smooth experience.
