As we predicted in our preview of 2025, all eyes need to be on Asia as we have some exciting news coming today from India.
Resorts World Cruises is to homeport in India for the first time, with Resorts World One debuting cruises homeporting from Mumbai between March and June this year.
Resorts World One will depart from the new world-class Mumbai International Cruise Terminal, with three weekly roundtrip cruise itineraries departing on Fridays, Sundays and Wednesdays focusing specifically on the potential of super short domestic cruises.
The debut of Resorts World Cruises follows a strategy that has focused increasingly on tapping into the lucrative and huge potential in the Indian market, having seen many passengers fly into Singapore to sail on the Genting Dream, and this winter season with the Resorts World One based in Dubai, focused on the Indian source market also.
“In support of the recently announced “Cruise Bharat Mission” by the Indian Government and the new world-class Mumbai International Cruise Terminal, we are excited to further boost India’s cruise tourism sector and bring the Resorts World One cruise ship to homeport in Mumbai,” said Michael Goh, president of Resorts World Cruises. “Mumbai is the main gateway to cruising in India and Indians will have the convenience of departing from their ‘doorsteps’, without the need to fly to another country.”
The announcement by Resorts World Cruises follows the establishment of the Indian government’s Cruise Bharat Mission initiative in October 2024. Over the course of three phases and five years, the initiative aims to increase the number of ocean cruise passengers from half a million to one million and river cruise passengers from half a million to 1.5 million. Infrastructure investments will increase the number of international cruise terminals from two to 10, while the number of river cruise terminals will increase from 50 to 100 and marinas from one to five. The initiative is expected to grow cruise employment from 100,000 to 400,000 by its completion.
This is really exciting news in the Asian cruise market, and shows that the potential of India for international cruise lines. We wish Resorts World Cruises the very best of success.
